Eastern Oregon Travel Guide

Wandering out onto the rangeland and pine forests of Eastern Oregon, it's hard not to be reminded that you are still in the west.  This is cowboy country in the truest sense, the rugged landscape supporting the same population as when it was ruled by the Northern Payute and Nez Perce for hundreds of years.  Each September, the Pendleton Round Up celebrates this proud heritage with the largest rodeo in the Northwest. 

Traveling here is to visit Oregon's extremes: the deepest canyon in the U.S. (Hells Canyon), the largest wilderness area in the state (Eagle Cap Wilderness), the sky concealed by migratory birds over the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge and coyotes howling at the moon.  Rustic hot springs are sprinkled throughout the desert, nestled against mountains, salt flats and enormous lakes.  Whether you are exploring the art galleries in Joseph and riding the tram to the top of the Wallowas or waking up at dawn to watch the mating dance of the sage grouse, there is no better place to experience the enormity of the Wild West.
