Eastern Washington Travel Guide
Washington has the distinct advantage over its friendly rival to the south in that nearly half of the state gets to enjoy the Columbia River as it winds down from the Canadian Rockies. With channeled scablands formed during the great Missoula Floods, rolling wheat fields, orchards and vineyards define this sunny and dry region lying at the same parallel as Bordeaux and Burgundy. With the extra daylight and cooler nights, one thing the many small appellations of the larger Columbia AVA all share is their characteristic balance of flavors, mature tannins and developed aromas.
Once only famous for its signature sweet onions, the Eastern Columbia River Gorge and Valley has become a major tasting destination, thanks in part to its proximity to other outdoor activities and the culture provided by its historical roots. Further north, Spokane and Coeur d'Alene are hidden gems of Summer and Winter recreation with mighty lakes, pine forests, and undiscovered mountains all nearby. But your most memorable experience might just be those signature sunsets across the golden plains.
